the Beachcomber, Wellfleet, MA, Aug. 2009

Dinosaur Jr. are continuously on tour. But their shows sell out pretty fast. If you weren’t able to see them in town last week, NYC Taper’s got you covered. The whole set, in one file. They do a good job. Notes on recording:

The venue was only allowing taping in the balcony section, which is less than ideal, but we were able to set up almost dead center. The instruments sound great; vocals are a little low in the mix but you’re not here for the words, are ya?

Check it outtttt.

Without cows there’d be so buffalo mozzarella. Without bees there’d be no honey. Without grass there’d be no blazing. And without Gram there’d be no J Mascis.

Dinosaur Jr. is the loudest band i’ve seen, and it’s probably the only band that can fill up Brooklyn Bowl. So go see them there tonight. J probably won’t play this classic Gram Parsons tune, which he did with the Flying Burrito Brothers, so here you go.

As J took the stage I could hardly fathom what was about to happen. There I was, at the Beachcomber in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, a room that fits about 150 people and sits on top of a high dune overlooking the ocean, and one of the greatest guitarists playing today was maybe 10 feet from me. And he plays fucking loud. I was a little nervous.

J and the rest of Dinosaur Jr. of course lived up to the hype. They played loud rock and roll with precision and dedication. What made the show though, was the crowd. Cape Cod is a tourist destination, so the show was a mix of tourists and locals. The crowd was not the crowd you’d see at a Dinosaur Jr. show in a city or even a college town. For one night the hardest alternative rock band ever was appealing to hippies, tough guys, soccer dads and local sons of fisherman. And everyone loved it. Everyone. (Note: how could they not though? This was a fucking loud rock show and everyone was drunk!)

The band worked their way through a great and varied set, avoiding many of the hits in favor of songs off the new album, Farm, and 2007’s Beyond. Crowd pleasers included “Out There,” “Tarpit” and the band’s awesome cover of “Just Like Heaven,” a Cure song.

It boggles my mind that J and Co. played Central Park yesterday to thousands of people.

Here’s a short video with bad iphone sound from the show, shot by Michael Nardullo:

Woah. Burning the shut dowwwwn.

Dinosaur Jr. is playing a secret unannounced show Saturday night at 9 in (almost) their hometown of Northampton, Mass at the fucking rad Pearl Street nightclub. The Antlers open. They’re playing downstairs (the smaller room, rad), the same place where Thurston Moore performed Psychic Hearts last fall. Read my Brooklyn Vegan review of that show here.

I’m seeing Dinosaur in an even smaller room right on the beach on Friday night. The Beachcomber in Wellfleet, Mass (Cape Cod) is the place to see a rock show…

And if you haven’t gotten the new album yet, Farm, you really, really need to.

Here’s a track off 2006’s Beyond:

A defiant howl hit me right in the chest:

“See all these dinosaurs? They want to rule the world!”

A rare and somewhat candid J Mascis Q and A. Mascis says some funny things, shrugs a lot (which is typical) and says the best guitar solo ever is “I guess Machine Gun- Band of Gypsys.”

Alright Alright I hear that.

Dino J is sold out on Thursday at the Music Hall of WBurg but the band is playing free on August 16 at Central Park.

Yes. I’m so excited. Even though the show will be crazy. Dinosaur Jr…. and The Walkmen? Ugh. Regardless, the Williamsburg Music Hall show has been sold out since before the tickets even went on sale so i’m pretty pumped about this.

Aug. 16, Central Park.

If you haven’t seen (heard) the Daytrotter session for Dino, check it out. It’s a little odd that they don’t play any new songs, but man oh man is Severed Lips a fucking awesome song. Anyone got an extra ticket to the MHofW show?!

By the way- the pic looks nothing like J.
