I know i’m a little late to the Vile party. I missed the first bus I guess. But i’ve gotten here, I mean there. The place where flies buzz around your face but it’s not too annoying because the melodies are intricate and syrupy and the vibes positive feel flows. And that’s not a Beach Boys reference.

Vile is filling a void that got deeper and deeper as this summer progressed- he is not making the beach jams we’re all so used to, or the tropicalia influenced dance beats that have so permeated the blogs and clubs and outdoor jams of the summer. No- Vile is a dark demon hiding in soft white sheets. I think he’s got a darkness that he’s hiding inside a pretty exterior. You can hear it in his songs.

“Hunchback” off his album Childish Prodigy, out on Oct. 6, is like Lou Reed gone buckwild. The Velvet Underground were a similar group- very dark but with a pretty and sweet frosting.

If you want something to cut the saccharine summer taste in your mouth, Kurt Vile is it.
