This Brooklyn three piece makes music that is a royal epic battle between emotion, tense circumstance and pop pleasure. Seriously, JP05 is music to ponder. Sure, you can get lost in the effect-laden guitar solos, or in the extended psych-outs with hard hit drums, but mostly the music begs you to choose- between what’s right and wrong, what’s boring and fun, what’s necessary and unnecessary. JP05 is Jeff Patlingrao, with Shawn Fogel of Golden Bloom and Steve Perry of Slow News Day.
Patlingrao is the singer-songwriter behind JP05, but he’s primarily a guitar player. Watching him play exemplifies this- he really knows his way up and down and across his instrument. He gets notes and chords out of his Jazzmaster with ease, your mouth will be agape.
JP05 is playing tomorrow night at Union Hall at 8. Go there if you’re looking for serious rock and roll with an introspective side. This is “kick out the jams motherfuckers!” music, not surfer beach music.
