This was recorded live at the Fillmore East, New Year’s Eve, 1969. Wish you were there right? The Band of Gypsys broke up 28 days later, so they say, after a disastrous performance at Madison Square Garden. Regardless, the raw energy and intensity of this Hendrix- as opposed to the Experience- is visceral and tangible.

“Machine Gun” is an anti-war song. Guitar distortion and strumming and drumming are meant to sound like bombs dropping. The power in this song chokes.

The threesome: Hendrix, Buddy Miles and Billy Cox, never recorded any songs properly so the live performance is all we have to remember them by. It’s enough, actually. It’s just right.
