Aimee Mann‘s song “Wise Up” is not only a great song, it’s also what made the amazing film “Magnolia” a masterful work of art. Just watch this video. Even if you haven’t seen the movie, (which is crazy, rent it), you’ll be pulled in by all the characters singing along. Janet Maslin in The New York Times review disagrees with me (not about the song but the scene):

“But when that group sing-along arrives, ”Magnolia” begins to self-destruct spectacularly. It’s astonishing to see a film begin this brilliantly only to torpedo itself in its final hour.”

OUCH. What do you think?

The song is not a hopeful one, the last lyrics are “give up,” but there’s something about it that begs you to not throw in the towel. Maybe it’s Mann’s pleading and breathy vocals, maybe it’s the earnest piano, I’m not sure.

The song is on the “Magnolia” soundtrack but was originally written for the film Jerry Maguire. Mann’s record label, Geffen, wouldn’t put out a bunch of demo songs she was working on around this time, many of which ended up on the “Magnolia” soundtrack, which was a huge hit.
