The New York Times had a rather large and very in-depth story this weekend on the taping culture surrounding the Grateful Dead. While it is very true that the phenomenon of tapers and the fans that do the taping and trading is intriguing, while reading the story I couldn’t help but wonder if there was a better way and trying to understand why the fans love the Dead so much. It’s also interesting that throughout the story, Ben Ratliff asked members of the band what they thought about the taping culture and what was the best show of the Dead’s career (an issue heavily debated among tapers) and the band never had anything of interest to say on the subject.
