Mountain Man keep it coming. Unbelievably it just gets better and better. Check out this video of them singing and recording (i think) “Animal Tracks.” The microphones are sick and so is that romantic room they’re in. SWOON.
Soon, but not soon enuf, you can purchase a 7″ release by Mountain Man, out on Underwater Peoples.

Just got this album in the mail yesterday. This kind of music hasn’t been listened to by me in a long time. And it’s nice to change it up a bit.
While the focus track below, “Cold Hands,” is not the best on the poppy, 90s inflected and Belle and Sebastian esque new album, it does offer a good opening into the simple guitar chord driven songs.
This is pretty catchy stuff. And the sound is very much from a different time- it’s not forward looking, it’s nostalgic. And that I like.
The new album by Pants Yell!, “Received Pronunciation,” is out on Slumberland on Nov. 10.

I was alerted to Larry Gus by the awesome Rose Quartz and I can only say “thanks!”
Larry Gus is Panagiotis Melidis and is from Greece but makes his music in Barcelona- alone in a bedroom with the bare minimum of materials: a portable turntable and a Roland sampler. The result is some mind expanding sound collages– with a little R&B influence.
The song below would be particularly good as the soundtrack to a foreign spy film, probably something French, where women in trench coats jump out of doorways at you.
Info on Gus is here. And you can also pick up a promo of his whole album “Stiches” there, which is coming out on Cast-a-Blast.

Thanks to Ray Concepcion for filming this. See if you can spot MME…
“Ascending Melody, Rise Above, Ascending Melody, Stronger Than All Concern”
FAIR ENOUGH!!
Oooh Oooh Oooh!
This is definitely in the same vein as the Dirty Projectors song “Temecula Sunrise,” which makes sense as this is a new track on the UK only EP release of the same name. Trebled out guitar lines, Amber and Dave back and forth vocals, a tambourine even, some chatter in the background… it’s all there.
I can’t fucking wait to see them again. Thanks to JP’s Blog for the tip.

Elliott Smith has been on my mind a lot lately. It was just the reunion of his sad passing on Oct. 21 and then a few days later I saw the documentary “Searching for Elliott Smith.” And then I was googling him looking for something i’d heard once before but needed to hear again. And here it is, Elliott covering The Kinks classic, “Waterloo Sunset” performed live at Brownies (remember Brownies) in the East Village on April 13, 1997.

Last week at the Chocolate Bobka/Underwater People’s/Olde English Spelling Bee Monkeytown event I saw Julian Lynch. Not in IRL (in real life), no. But it was live over the internet. He played the clarinet. The sound was really stark and almost dreamlike and got me wondering about the mind inside someone who makes music like that. It’s easier to relate to “rock stars” or loud wailing guitar players, at least on a surface level. It’s not difficult to understand the task of the hype man. But what about those people that fiddle around with tapes and hiss and clarinets to make music? What is in their minds? I unfortunately don’t have the answer. But if you listen to the music of Julian Lynch maybe you can figure it out for yourself. You can get some of it here. Music isn’t subjective, after all…
Lefse Records is releasing this tune below, “Sister,” on an upcoming 7″. Thanks to Weekly Tape Deck for the alert.
