The latest Sonic Youth was a mess, and not a hot one. But Thurston’s solo album, Trees Outside the Academy, was a perfect gem in the swirling ocean of good and bad. Moore is also an author- 2007′s “No Wave” was a success, and now he’s written the text for yet another book of photos and nostalgic memories. It’s called, simply, “Grunge” and is out Oct. 15. See pics and info here.
VietNam was my absolute favorite band in 2007. I saw them a few times, even with the Lemonheads!! And then they dissapeared. I think they’re coming back. Back in BK? Probably not. They’re Cali buds now. Check this out. Ohhhh shit.
Michael (Gerner) looks hot. Why is Farmer Dave playing though?
In my first post on the Neon Indian tour I mentioned I thought the Music Hall of Williamsburg was not a good venue for the band. Today we get the news that the show will be held elsewhere- at the ROOT studio. Anyone know anything about this venue??

Tara Jane O’Neil is one of those lasting 90s performers. She is lasting because she never got too big. She remained in the underground because her music, both her solo stuff and her earlier work with Rodan, is just too damn weird. O’Neil’s most recent album, A Ways Away, is full of intricate and dreamy guitar picking coupled with what i can only call melodic noise. This track below, thanks to Rollo & Grady, is a little mystical and a little Southern charm along the lines of Azure Ray. O’Neil calls Portland, OR home but is from Louisville.
O’Neil is on tour in the states soon. See dates here. She’ll be at The Market Hotel on Halloween! I saw her in that very venue last Spring, and it was breathtaking.

Man oh man. I remember days of going to acting classes in Middletown, Ct. and this song was always on the radio. 1992. I was 10. And I was so alive. I don’t think I liked anything more than this song. And I thought Anthony Kiedis was the hottest shit on earth. Also, the video was directed by Gus Van Sant!
Red Hot Chili Peppers: Under The Bridge

I remember so fondly the Billy Bragg and WILCO combo-plate, Mermaid Avenue. Beautiful Woody Guthrie lyrics, tonky guitars and perfectly pitched vocals. That album oozed breezy romance like a tomato oozes juice and seeds. Yup. I just read in The L Mag that Jay Farrar, former Uncle Tupelo man, is doing another Mermaid Avenue. Details here.
And to remind you of that juicy goodness, here’s the best track.

Ok so this is like the biggest fucking news of the year! Pitchfork is so damn excited they can’t write any sub-head’s they just put !!!!!!!!!!! all over their home page. I too, am freaking excited. But let’s tame ourselves a little.
Why shit bricks for something that we won’t get for a year! Patience people. You’re going to get all backed up.
On the other hand, there are many reasons to get pumped. Did anyone see Malkmus and the Jicks maybe 5 years ago at Battery Park on the 4th of July? That show was the shiiiiiit. Malkmus really knows how to turn on the crowd. There’s also the time he sang with Sonic Youth, and he was so good they wanted him to join the band.
So. Tickets are on sale tomorrow. Details: The password for the pre-sale is ZOWEE and the ticketing link is http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/00004330A3C355DD. The general on-sale is slated for 10:00 AM EDT on Friday, September 25, 2009. Please note that tickets will be available without surcharges from the Nokia Theatre box office in Times Square and from Earwax at 218 Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg. Are you tired of those fuzzed out summer time jams that we all got REALLL used to over the past few months?? (Best Coast, Washed Out, Ducktails, Real Estate (a little)?? Me neither! So here’s another, with a twist. READING RAINBOW.
What a great name. Butterfly in the Sky would also make a great band name. Hey, did you know Reading Rainbow was finally taken off the air? Sad Face. Is it cos kids don’t read??!? LeVar Burton hasn’t aged a day…
Anyway, Reading Rainbow is a Philly band, and they make trance inducing music that you can hear for yourself this Friday at the Cake Shop.
The album, Mystical Participation, can be obtained here.
What’s the twist? Hmmm. Lemon? Lime? It’s a little tribal. Take a listen, thanks to Weekly Tape Deck.
Reading Rainbow: In The City
Reading Rainbow: In The City
SIDENOTE: A lot of bands are singing about the elusive “city.” The Babies lead track is “Meet Me in the City.” Is it a love affair with urbanity that’s inspiring these songs???
This is perhaps the best song, and was the first leaked track, off Vivian Girls’ new album, Everything Goes Wrong. The video is a hazy shake, just like their music. Move along, move along. That’s how it feels. There is some nice sunset lighting, too.
