I’ll be in Mexico through June 1. So no blogging. No posting, no twittering or face-ing. I AM SO EXCITED. Love to all. On the flipside.

I’ll be in Playa Zipolite (pictured above), Oaxaca City, Pueblos Mancomunados and Mexico City.

emotions

There’s something about disco. A good disco song is like the best moment of your best summer- so jivey and breezily fanciful. “The Best of my Life” by The Emotions is one of those songs.

In high school my friend Molly and I threw a disco party after seeing “The Last Days of Disco,” which is not the best film but is really fun. The party was a hit- lots of booze and platforms. This song was most certainly on the CD player that night….

The way I feel about you baby can’t explain it! Want the whole wide world to understand!

And, from Boogie Nights….”You are the sexiest bitch in this club!”

This music is such an amalgamation of sounds and genres that calling it anything more than “vibes” would be like calling a lasagna “pasta.”

Seriously, this song “Doki,” makes me think I can jump out my window and fly. It’s super mellow and enchanting but yet you still move to the beat. The guys name is Friend. He’s def my “friend.”

The Fader has a Quicktime download and the video for “Doki.”

sheaopeningflyer

First of all, best name ever. Second of all, this place sounds rad. I love the warehouse DIY venues where the drinks are cheap, or you can bring your own, and the pretense is at the lowest level possible. I think that’s what Brooklyn’s Shea Stadium will be like….It opens this weekend. For details, check the Vegan.

What’s super cool is that they record the shows, for the bands. I’m not sure how they get good sound in a big warehouse filled with people. That remains to be seen.

Check it this weekend. The Donner Party will be there too. Chills up my spine…

Oh, and FIASCO play on May 30. WOOOO!

Being a Bright Eyes and Conor Oberst fan, I catch a lot of flack. For some reason, the man attracts die-hard fans and die-hard haters. That said, I love the guy. He’s prolific as fuck, and nearly everything he touches, writes, sings, turns to gold. Cassadega, released in ’07, was OK. It’s the only album Conor put out that isn’t unbelievably good. But “Coat Check Dream Song” is awesome. It feels like a light and soft E trip. I mean, as if I know what that means….

“GET COLOR is an exuberant proclamation of noise, rock and electronic splendor.”

So says the Press Release. We’ll see. Judging by the tracks we already know, HEALTH are raucous and fun. Here’s hoping “Get Color” will deliver 100 punches.

Check out the young Robert Zimmerman….

I would never drop the bills, even if i had them, but still this is cool.

The lines are mad dark:

He was such a lovely doggy
And to me he was such fun
But today as we played by the way
A drunken man got mad at him
Because he barked in joy
He beat him and he’s dying here today.

If dancing is your thing (and of course, IT IS) check out the Matts- otherwise knows as HSFY (Hot Shit Fuck Yeah) at Rose Bar in Williamsburg. Call this your summer kick-off party. The weather will be nice, everything right, wear white.

For real, these guys mash island riddims with mainstream pop hop circa 1998 like nobody else. And sometimes there are costumes for all.

radiohead

With news of Radiohead in the studio AGAIN, I thought i’d go back to 1995 with “High and Dry,” one of my favorite tracks by Yorke and Co. The success of Radiohead is pretty crazy. Much like Sonic Youth, Radiohead has legions of devoted fans in the mainstream, but they are somehow able to maintain their indie “cool.” It’s admirable. Maybe last years In Rainbows release had something to do with it. You remember, pay what you can?? Yeah.

“High and Dry” is a bittersweet tune, one where Thom Yorke’s whine makes you want to grab him and wrap him up in a big snuggie and never let him out. Maybe that’s why Yorke has said he thinks this song is bad. It makes people think of snuggies and blankets and warmth and comfort. And that’s mad corny.

Look at this cutie:

A Captain’s Log of Passion Pit’s Record Release on the Hudson River:

20:00 A hoard of music lovers come aboard the Temptress at 41st. The skies are starting to give way to pastels. The air is crisp. These folks aren’t dressed appropriately for the high seas. I believe they are more concerned with this record release party of this licentiously named band. Ahoy!

20:20 Yes, yes you’re on a boat young man with the sunglasses on. I’d prefer you call it a yacht or a ship. Show some respect. You are also on a boat girl with hot pink keffiyeh. Stop stating the obvious and enjoy the sunset while readying yourselves for the Passion Pit – that’s euphemism for something untoward, right? – and the motion of the ocean – that is not a euphemism for something in this case. We cast off our lines and embark on a three-hour tour.

20:21 Acapella group of douchebags did not take heed of my request to stop stating the obvious ad nauseum. Some tipsy underage girls are finding them attractive and amusing. I’m about to turn this boat around.
